Biography |
The
Festetics Quartet performs on period instruments with
special regard for historical performance practices; it
combines the technique of using original instruments with
the legendary tradition of Hungarian string quartets.
The Quartet is named after an important Hungarian family,
the Festetics, who founded the famous Helikon music library.
It is at present the only string quartet of its kind in
Central Europe. The repertoire of the Festetics includes
the string quartets by Haydn and Mozart as well as the
early works by Beethoven and Schubert. Since Haydn spent
a large portion of his life in Hungary and was particulary
attracted to "verbunkos”, the Quartet has a special
affinity with Haydn’s music and likes to consider it part
of the Hungarian musical heritage. The Festetics have
extensively studied Haydn’s original quartet manuscripts,
and have relied heavily on noted Haydn scholar László
Somfai in their search for the most "authentic"
way of performing the quartets. Also of great interest
to the Quartet is performing the works of lesser known
18th century Hungarian composers and the best of Hungarian
“verbunkos” music.
